Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit leader in research, public education, policy, and advocacy in the field of environmental health, invites job seekers with an interest in health and environmental research to apply for a Scientist position with our organization. 

 

EWG Science team has published groundbreaking research on drinking water contaminants, pesticides, chemical policy and regulations, and consumer products. EWG is nationally known for its comprehensive and interactive databases, compiled and built over many years, such as EWG’s Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce; Tap Water Database, the largest publicly accessible data repository on tap water contaminant occurrence in the United States; PFAS contamination map; and Skin Deep® database of  personal care products. 

 

Duties:

 
  • Conduct original research on topics relevant to public health and environmental science and  publish articles in peer-reviewed journals 
  • Collaborate with all EWG teams in the development of reports for EWG’s website, comment letters on policy and regulatory matters, and other educational materials
  • Support EWG’s database projects and curate and analyze public health datasets 
  • Represent EWG’s research team at conferences and public events
  • Serve as science expert for the media, digital communications and government affairs 

Relevant Qualifications:

 
  • Prior experience in research and experience delivering talks about research projects
  • Graduate degree or comparable educational experience in fields related to environmental health, environmental science, public health, chemistry or toxicology  
  • Experience with data science and analysis of large datasets
  • Experience with software tools such as  R programming language
  • Experience with statistical analysis
  • Experience in scientific writing aimed towards general audience
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong sense of curiosity; team-oriented and collaborative outlook

Examples of EWG research projects:

 
  • Cumulative toxicity assessment of health impacts of pesticide use
  • Risk assessment for synthetic food additives
  • Framework for the prevalence of drinking water contaminants and associated cancer risk
  • Epidemiological and economic analysis of adverse health impacts associated with drinking water contaminants
  • Toxicology review of pre- and post-natal sensitivity to chemical pollutants

Location:  Sacramento, California or Washington, DC EWG office.  Full-time remote work is not possible for this position.
